Getting
the Most Out of Your System
The AS/400 and iSeries have enjoyed
consistent enhancements in hardware power and software features since
it was introduced in 1988. If you've been running your system without
making any changes for the past few years, you may have missed out on
some impressive enhancements.
- A GUI front end for AS/400 operations
- Accessing your AS/400 using a browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape
- Dividing your iSeries into logical partitions. This allows you to run multiple copies and releases of the OS/400 Operating System as well as Linux on a single iSeries processor.
- Using your AS/400 as a Web Server.
- Making your homegrown applications enabled for the internet without rewriting them.
- Exploit file transfer functions to and from your PC's. (For example, AS/400 data transferred directly to an Excel spreadsheet.)
- Convert AS/400 reports into e-mail attachments
- Support multiple language characters on a single AS/400
- Take advantage of faster tape drives for backups
- Take advantage of network attached printers
- Use IBM's Electronic Service Agent software to have your iSeries notify IBM about hardware problems BEFORE they occur.
I can help you implement these features but this is only a start. There have been a lot of other enhancements in the realm of JAVA, Lotus Domino, application development and there are more to come! |
